ARKANSAS: TWO ORPHAN SOURCES FIND A HOME

Recently, Bionomics provided services to the State of Arkansas for the packaging and removal of two CDV Calibrators.  With the assistance of EnergySolutions, the two devices were loaded into the 10-160B Cask and sent to Southwest Research Institute for inclusion into the US DOE Offsite Recovery Program.

While the shielding of the cask is not needed, most CDVs remaining among the public are at a strength that requires a Type B container.  Since there are no small unshielded and approved Type B containers available, the only option is the 10-160B.  This costly expense for moving these Sources highlights the need for the development of any approved Type B designed to transport high activity sources that do not require shielding.
